you're almost cellmotepy right the only thing your wrong about is randomly picking up a bass and TRYING to play if you dont cover songs, then you wont know what your style of playing is. im a progressive rock kind of bassist. the shit i play is hard stuff. and dont get me wrong, i love to play a rock n roll bass line here and there. im expanding on my own skills rather then just attempting to play an instrument i know nothing about.
